Being a full chimney system exposed to the elements is what makes the outdoor build demanding. We pour a footing sized to the patio's freeze depth, lay the firebox in firebrick and refractory mortar, form a smoke chamber and flue that drafts in open, windy conditions, and crown and cap the stack to shed water for decades. Sitting under open sky, an outdoor fireplace is prone to wind-driven downdraft — the classic failure — so we set the stack height and a spark-arrestor cap to draw cleanly and meet wildfire ember-screen requirements.

A gas fire feature calls for a different but equally exacting craft. On a gas pit or burner we install a listed, outdoor-rated burner, air mixer, and flame-sensing ignition so raw gas can't pool in the pan, run and key-valve the gas supply, and set the LP regulator or NG connection to the correct manifold pressure. Burner pans get drainage weeps so they light cleanly after rain, and fire-glass or lava-rock media is sized and bedded so the ports stay clear and the flame spreads evenly. On a wood pit, we set a heavy-gauge ring inside a stacked-block or paver surround built to contain heat and embers.

Materials and finish are chosen for the outdoors specifically — freeze-thaw-rated masonry, exterior-grade veneer and stone, and stainless components where weather demands them — and we detail the hearth, surround, and any outdoor-kitchen tie-in to the design. The point of a well-built outdoor fireplace is that it still looks built — crisp, plumb, and intact — after years of seasons.
