Hand-sealing with mastic only reaches the joints someone can physically get to, which in a finished house is a minority of them. Aerosol sealing works from the inside instead: we block the registers, pressurize the duct system, and inject an atomized sealant that gets carried to the leaks and builds at the edges until they close.
