Chimney Glossary

Every chimney term we use, explained without jargon. Bookmark this — it's the same vocabulary your insurance adjuster + home inspector will use.

Creosote

Tar-like residue from incomplete wood combustion. Highly flammable.

Black residue, ranging from sticky to glassy, that coats the inside of a chimney flue as wood smoke condenses on cool walls. It progresses through three forms: dust at Stage 1, a crunchy layer at Stage 2, and hard glaze at Stage 3, which is the form behind most chimney fires. An annual sweeping clears Stages 1–2; removing Stage 3 takes restoration.

NFPA 211

The US standard covering how chimney, fireplace, and vent systems are installed.

The National Fire Protection Association code that governs chimney installation, inspection, and maintenance in the United States. Defines the three levels of inspection, clearance requirements, and creosote thresholds. Every TSE job follows NFPA 211.

Inspection Levels

Level 1 (annual), Level 2 (sale or event), and Level 3 (concealed damage).

The three formal tiers of chimney inspection defined by NFPA 211. Level 1 covers readily accessible areas and is recommended every year. Level 2 adds a video scope and is required after a property transfer, a system change, or any hazardous event (chimney fire, lightning, earthquake). Level 3 is the invasive tier, opening walls or the chase, used when Level 2 leaves concealed damage suspected.

Flue

The inner passage that carries combustion gases up and out of the house.

The vertical passage running up inside the chimney that vents smoke, water vapor, and CO out of the house. You will find it unlined masonry (older builds, and a problem), lined with clay tile (the norm on most masonry chimneys), or metal-lined on newer construction. Once a flue cracks, it becomes a fire hazard.

Liner

The inner channel running through the flue, made of clay tile, stainless steel, or cast-in-place.

The material that lines the inside of your chimney flue. Current code calls for a UL-listed liner, usually 316Ti or 316L stainless steel, to keep heat and gases contained. If the liner is cracked or missing you have both a fire hazard and a code violation, and relining is the standard fix our crew handles.

Crown

The concrete cap at the very top of a masonry chimney.

The poured concrete or stone slab that caps the top course of a masonry chimney, and not the same thing as the metal chimney cap. Its job is to shed water off to the sides, away from the masonry underneath. Let cracks form and water seeps into the brick, which speeds up freeze-thaw spalling. Hairline cracks take a crown coat sealing; serious damage means a full rebuild.

Chimney Cap

The metal cover-and-mesh assembly on top of the flue.

Fits over the flue opening up top to hold rain, snow, animals, and embers where they belong. Go stainless steel and it lasts a lifetime; galvanized gives you about 5 years. Mesh size matters for spark arresting, since NFPA 211 calls for specific dimensions.

Spalling

When trapped moisture goes through freeze-thaw cycles, the brick face flakes and breaks away from the chimney.

Brick that has visibly broken down, with the outer face flaking, popping, or crumbling away. It happens when water soaks into the brick and then freezes. Around DFW, the freeze-thaw swings paired with humid summers push spalling along faster. Waterproofing buys you time, but rebuilding the affected sections is the only true fix.

Tuckpointing

Repointing or rebuilding the mortar joints between bricks.

The trade of grinding out mortar joints that have failed and packing in fresh, color-matched mortar. That brings back both structural strength and weather resistance. We see it constantly on DFW chimneys once they hit 20 years old.

Damper

The valve that opens/closes the flue.

The metal plate or valve that opens to let smoke escape while a fire burns and closes to seal the flue the rest of the time. There are two kinds: the throat damper sitting above the firebox in older setups, and the top damper mounted at the very top on newer ones, which seals far better and cuts heat loss by 30% or more.

Smoke Chamber

The transition area between the firebox and the flue.

The angled, parging-lined section sitting above the firebox that channels smoke up into the narrower flue. When the surfaces here are rough, creosote grabs hold; a coat of refractory parging smooths everything out for stronger draft and less buildup.

CSIA

The Chimney Safety Institute of America, the body whose certification sets the industry standard for chimney work.

The non-profit that certifies professional chimney sweeps, inspectors, and reviewers in the US. CSIA-certified inspectors hold current credentials verifiable in the CSIA member directory. Every TSE field tech is CSIA-certified.

Firebox

The chamber where the fire actually burns.

The chamber that holds the fire, lined with either brick or refractory panels. Cracked refractory panels count as a fire-safety code violation, because heat can reach the combustible framing behind them. Whatever panels go in have to match the spec for your fireplace make and model.

Throat

The narrowed opening just above the firebox.

The funneled brick section right above the firebox, where the damper sits and smoke starts its climb up into the smoke chamber. Throats sized wrong lead to smoking and draft trouble, and a smoke-guard kit is usually the cheapest way to sort it out.

Hearth

The firebox floor together with the protective floor extension in front of it.

This comes in two parts: the inner hearth, which is the firebox floor, and the hearth extension, the non-combustible section reaching out in front of the firebox. IRC sets the extension at a minimum of 16\" deep for fireboxes under 6 sq ft and 20\" for anything larger.

Thimble

The pass-through fitting that a flue uses where it penetrates a wall.

A UL-listed sleeve, either refractory or metal, that carries a stove pipe safely through a combustible wall and into the chimney. When a thimble is sized or installed wrong, it becomes a leading cause of wall fires.

Chase

The framed enclosure around a factory-built chimney.

The rectangular structure, framed in wood and clad in siding, that conceals a factory-built metal chimney on the outside of the house. The chase top leaks more often than anything else up there, so it needs proper flashing, plus a cricket once it runs wider than 30\".

Chase Cover

The metal lid that caps a chase.

A sloped sheet-metal cover that sits over a chase enclosure to shed water. Galvanized versions rust through in 7 to 10 years and streak the chase siding orange along the way; go with stainless or copper and you get 25+ years out of it.

Cricket

The roof saddle that diverts water around a chimney.

A small ridge built into the roof behind a chimney on the uphill side, steering water around the chimney instead of letting it pool against the base. IRC R1003.20 makes crickets mandatory on any chimney wider than 30\".

Flashing

Metal sheeting that seals where chimney meets roof.

A two-layer waterproof seal made from step flashing tucked under the shingles and counter-flashing set into the mortar joints. Caulk-only patches give out inside 2 years, since proper flashing means grinding fresh reglets into the brick.

Spark Arrestor

The mesh screen on a chimney cap that keeps embers from escaping into the air.

The wire mesh part of a chimney cap. NFPA 211 puts the mesh openings no smaller than 3/8\" and no larger than 1/2\", tight enough to stop sparks (it must not let a 1/2\" sphere through) yet open enough to keep the draft moving. Wildfire zones and plenty of municipalities require one.

Video Scope

Camera inspection of the inside of the flue.

A high-resolution camera fed down the flue on a flexible cable to look for cracks, gaps, creosote buildup, animal nests, and shifted tiles. It is required for Level 2 NFPA inspections and is standard practice before any insurance claim.

Carbon Monoxide Detector

Required safety device for fireplaces.

UL-2034 listed CO detectors with digital readouts belong on every floor and within 15 feet of every sleeping area whenever there is a fireplace in the home. The sensors wear out over time, so plan to replace them every 7 years.

Draft

Upward flow of air through the chimney.

The pressure difference between the inside of the chimney and the air outside that draws combustion gases up and out. When draft is poor you get smoking, backpuffing, and CO buildup. The fixes are warming the flue, cracking a window, or dealing with negative pressure in the house.

Backdraft

Reverse airflow that pushes smoke or fumes back down into the room instead of up the flue.

What happens when chimney draft gives out and combustion byproducts roll back down the flue into your living space. The usual culprits are a cold flue, a blocked cap, negative house pressure from exhaust fans, or a taller competing flue nearby. Because it carries a CO risk, get a diagnostic on the calendar right away.

Refractory Panel

The replaceable firebox lining of a factory-built fireplace.

Pre-cast cement panels that line the firebox of a zero-clearance fireplace. Cracks wider than 1/16\", or wider than the edge of a credit card, are a code violation, because heat can pass through to the steel firebox shell and the framing around it.

Zero-Clearance Fireplace

Factory-built fireplace that can be installed against framing.

A UL-listed manufactured fireplace assembly with built-in insulation and venting, which lets it sit right up against combustible framing. It is a different animal from a masonry fireplace, and its replacement parts are specific to the model.

Gas Valve

A manual or millivolt valve that controls how much gas reaches a log set.

The shut-off valve you will usually find in the firebox floor, along a side wall, or behind a key set into the hearth. Code requires that shut-off to be reachable without pulling the logs out. Millivolt valves rely on a thermopile-generated current to open the main valve.

Thermopile

The voltage-generating sensor that powers a gas valve.

A bundle of thermocouples that puts out millivolts of electricity once the pilot flame heats it, and that current drives the main valve in standing-pilot gas fireplaces. On a test reading, 650 to 850 mV is healthy, while anything below 300 mV is on its way out.

Thermocouple

Single sensor that holds the pilot valve open.

A single-junction temperature sensor that generates roughly 25 mV when heated, holding the pilot's safety valve open. It fails more often than any other part on a gas fireplace, and swapping it out runs about $30 as a routine maintenance item.

Parging

A smooth coating of refractory mortar applied over the walls of the smoke chamber.

A refractory mortar troweled on to smooth the rough corbeled brick of the smoke chamber. Code requires it on smoke chambers, and it does double duty by improving draft and cutting creosote accumulation way down.

Tile Relining

Swapping out cracked or damaged clay flue tiles for fresh tile or a metal liner.

Once clay flue tiles crack or shift, which often follows a chimney fire, the flue has to be relined. You have a few routes: replacing the tile, which means opening up the masonry, a cast-in-place liner, or a stainless steel liner, the option most homeowners go with today.

Fireback

Decorative cast-iron plate behind the fire.

An ornamental cast-iron or steel plate hung across the back of the firebox to shield the masonry and radiate heat back into the room. You see it in heritage masonry fireplaces; modern factory-built units do not use one.

Flue Tile

Clay ceramic blocks stacked to form a chimney flue.

Terracotta blocks, rectangular or round and usually 24\" tall, stacked one on top of another with thin mortar joints to build the inner channel of a masonry chimney. Crack, gap, or shift any of them and the chimney fails inspection and needs relining.

Ash Dump

A floor hatch in the firebox that lets ash drop down to a basement ash pit.

A small trap door set into the firebox floor of older masonry fireplaces that drops ash into a storage chamber reached from the basement or crawl space. Newer fireplaces generally skip it, and the ash gets shoveled out by hand instead.

Level 1 Inspection

Visual annual inspection of readily accessible areas.

The basic yearly check covering the readily accessible parts of the chimney and its connections, needing nothing fancier than a flashlight. Best done every year ahead of heating season. Figure roughly 30 minutes and $99–$149 around DFW.

Level 2 Inspection

A detailed inspection run with a video scope, required for home sales and after any chimney event.

This one adds attic and crawl space access along with a video scope run inside the flue. It is called for after a property transfer, a fuel-source change, or a hazardous event such as a chimney fire, lightning, or seismic activity, and any time a Level 1 finding triggers it. Runs $199–$299 in DFW.

Level 3 Inspection

Invasive inspection involving removal of components or framing.

Called for when a Level 2 inspection points to concealed damage. Getting to the hidden parts of the chimney may mean removing brick, drywall, or chase siding. Pricing tracks the access work involved and gets quoted once the Level 2 is done.
