When a fireplace puffs smoke back into the room, the instinct is to blame the chimney — and sometimes it is a blocked or dirty flue. But just as often the chimney is fine and the house is the culprit. Modern homes are built tight, and a tight house can lose the tug-of-war between the chimney's gentle natural draft and the powerful exhaust fans scattered around it. That's negative pressure, and once you understand it, the fix is logical.
